Thai driving licence for foreigners

A Thai licence is cheaper than an international permit, valid for insurance claims, and accepted as identification across Thailand. Most applicants can finish in a single day at the DLT once the paperwork is right.

What actually delays a DLT application

Almost nobody fails the theory test. Applications stall on the residence certificate — it expires, or Immigration will not issue one because the TM30 address notification is missing — and on a medical certificate issued outside the validity window. Get those two right, bring a certified translation of your foreign licence, and the practical test is usually waived.

What we handle

Residence certificate

Immigration or embassy certificate of residence obtained and timed to stay valid on your test day.

Certified translation

Your foreign licence translated and certified so the DLT can waive the practical test.

Medical certificate

Standard-form certificate from a clinic, issued within the validity window.

DLT booking and escort

Appointment booked and a Thai-speaking escort with you through registration, tests and photography.

Renewal to five years

Two-year to five-year conversion and later renewals, with the refresher requirements handled.

International driving permit

IDP issued on a valid Thai licence for driving abroad.

How the process runs

  1. 1. Document check

Passport, visa, TM30/TM47 status and foreign licence reviewed before anything is booked.

  2. 2. Residence certificate

Applied for at Immigration, or coordinated with your embassy.

  3. 3. Translation and medical

Certified translation prepared and a clinic appointment arranged the same week.

  4. 4. DLT appointment

Slot booked at the office that runs the theory test in your language.

  5. 5. Test day

Physical tests, training video, theory examination and — if required — the practical test.

  6. 6. Issue and renewal diary

Licence issued the same day, with your two-year renewal date recorded and reminded.

Frequently asked questions

Can a foreigner hold a Thai driving licence?

Yes, on almost any long-stay basis — Non-B, Non-O, retirement, LTR, DTV, education or a work permit — provided you can prove an address in Thailand. Tourists on a visa exemption generally cannot, because the address proof required is issued only to residents.

What proof of address is accepted?

Either a residence certificate issued by Immigration, or a certificate of residence issued by your embassy. Immigration certificates are cheaper and are what most applicants use, but they take a few working days and some offices require you to appear in person with your TM30 and TM47 records in order.

Do I need a medical certificate?

Yes, and it must be recent — typically issued within the last month. Any Thai clinic can issue one; it confirms you are free of the conditions listed in the regulations. The clinic form must be the standard medical certificate, not a general letter.

Can I convert a foreign licence instead of taking the driving test?

If your foreign licence is valid and accompanied by a certified Thai translation — or you hold a valid international driving permit — the Department of Land Transport will normally waive the practical driving test. You still complete the physical reaction tests, the video training and the written theory examination.

What are the physical tests?

Colour recognition, depth perception, peripheral vision and brake reaction time. They are quick, and they are the step that surprises applicants most, because a failed reaction test means returning another day.

Is the theory test available in English?

Yes at most major offices, along with several other languages, though availability varies by branch. The questions cover Thai road signs, right of way and alcohol limits. The training video that precedes the test also runs in English at those offices.

How long is the licence valid?

A first Thai licence is temporary and valid for two years. It can then be renewed to a five-year licence, and renewed again for successive five-year terms. Renewal within the permitted window is straightforward; letting it lapse for too long forces you back through the tests.

Do I need a separate motorcycle licence?

Yes. Car and motorcycle licences are separate categories with separate tests, and riding on a car licence alone voids most insurance policies in the event of a claim. Both can be applied for on the same day at the same office.
