Why NAATI matters for your Australian visa
The Department of Home Affairs, every state Registrar of Births Deaths & Marriages, all state road-transport authorities (VicRoads, Service NSW, Transport QLD, Transport WA, SA Gov) and every university in Australia accept translations only when the translator holds a current NAATI credential visible on the stamp. Every practitioner on the NAATI roster is verifiable at naati.com.au/online-directory — take the seven-digit Practitioner ID from the top of the stamp and paste it into the directory search.

FAQs
Is a Thai birth certificate translated in Thailand accepted by Home Affairs?
Yes — provided the translator holds a current NAATI Certified credential (Practitioner ID visible on the stamp). Migration Regulations 1994 reg 2.27 accepts translations produced outside Australia when they carry a recognised credential. Every practitioner on our roster is listed at naati.com.au/online-directory.
Do I need to send the original document to Bangkok?
No. Australia Home Affairs, VicRoads and Service NSW all accept translations made from a colour scan (‘Sighted a copy’). Send scans via LINE @NAATI or email; you keep the paper original at all times. If a Registrar of BDM interview later asks for the paper, we can re-issue a certified hard copy overnight.
What is the fastest turnaround into Sydney or Melbourne?
Soft-copy PDF within 24 hours, or 6 hours on the Same-Day Express lane (senior practitioner + peer reviewer working in parallel). Hard copies dispatched from Bangkok reach Sydney/Melbourne CBD in 3 business days via DHL Express and 5 business days via Australia Post Express.
How is the price quoted — per page or per word?
Per document at a fixed range (THB 500–2,500 per document / roughly AUD 22–110 at 45 THB/AUD). Short civil records (birth cert, ID card, driving licence) sit at THB 500–800; multi-page technical documents (transcripts, bank statements, tax returns) at THB 1,200–2,500. Bundle 10+ documents for a 15% discount.
Can you translate into languages other than English?
Yes — we hold NAATI Certified credentials for 12 language pairs beyond Thai↔English, including Lao, Khmer, Burmese, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Chinese (Simplified/Traditional), Japanese, Korean, Hindi, Arabic, French, German, and Spanish. Ask on LINE @NAATI for the exact pair.

Most Australian authorities require translations produced by a NAATI-certified translator, showing the translator's stamp and practitioner number. What you must provide is a full-colour scan of every page of the original, name spellings taken from the passport, and the name of the body you are filing with so the certification format matches their rules.
Documents to prepare
| Document | Issued by | Preparation note |
|---|---|---|
| Full-colour scan of every page of the original | The document holder | At least 300 dpi, seals and signatures legible, nothing cropped. |
| Passport photo page | Department of Consular Affairs | Used as the authority for name spelling throughout the translation. |
| Name of the receiving body and the purpose of filing | The document holder | For example Department of Home Affairs, a university, or a skills-assessing authority. |
| Previously used spellings of your nameif applicable | The document holder | If you have filed before, reuse the earlier spelling so the file is not read as another person. |
| Name-change certificateif applicable | District office | Required when the original document's name differs from the current passport. |
| Delivery address for a hard copyif applicable | The document holder | Most bodies accept PDF, but some ask for a stamped printed copy. |
Step-by-step process
- 1
Send the scans and name the destinationyou prepare
Send files by LINE or email and tell us which body will receive them, so we match the certification wording and layout to their rules.
- 2
Completeness check before translation startswe handle
We verify page count, legibility and name consistency with the passport, and raise any problem before charging.
- 3
Translation by a NAATI-certified practitionerwe handle
The practitioner renders every element including seals, signatures and endorsements, mirroring the original layout.
- 4
Two-stage proofing, then certificationwe handle
A second reviewer compares the translation line by line with the source before the stamp and practitioner number are applied.
- 5
Deliver PDF and, if needed, hard copywe handle
A PDF for online filing, plus a printed copy where required, with a file retained so a reprint is possible.
Pitfalls — why files get rejected
Sending a skewed or dark phone photo
If a seal or document number is unreadable the translation must mark it illegible, which the receiver may reject.
Different name spellings across documents
Always follow the passport, and tell us if you have used another spelling before.
Translating only the pages you think matter
Most bodies want the complete document; partial sets trigger a re-submission.
Assuming a NAATI translation replaces Thai legalisation
They are separate layers; if the receiver wants MFA legalisation or an Apostille, that step still applies.
Ordering right before a visa deadline
Two-stage proofing takes time; leave room in case extra documents are needed.
Comparing the translation types people ask about
| Option | Best for | Authority | Caveat |
|---|---|---|---|
| NAATI certified translation | Australian/NZ visas, skills assessment, university admission | A NAATI-certified practitioner | Not a Thai government certification; it does not replace legalisation. |
| Company-certified translation | Banks, employers and bodies that do not specify NAATI | The translation company | Often not accepted by Australian immigration bodies. |
| MFA-legalised translation | Thai civil registration and non-Hague destinations | Department of Consular Affairs, MFA | Adds time and requires the original document. |
If you do it yourself
- Find a certified practitioner and verify their credential yourself.
- Produce scans that meet the receiver's legibility standard.
- Cross-check name spellings across every document yourself.
- Handle it yourself if the receiver asks for a different certification format.
If we handle it end to end
- We audit your files first and flag what would get the file bounced.
- A certified practitioner plus a second reviewer on every job.
- Notarisation, legalisation or embassy steps continue in the same file.
- We retain the file so a reissue is quick when you file again.
- Free consultation on LINE before you commit to an order.
We advise, not just process paperwork
- We always ask where you will file, because accepted certification formats differ.
- Our team has more than 15 years in translation and official document work.
- If the receiver does not require NAATI, we will offer you the cheaper option.
- We do not guarantee any visa or assessment outcome.
NOTARY & APOSTILLE TRANSLATION INTERPRETERS (NAATI) CO., LTD. — a team with more than 15 years of work in translation, document certification and filings with Thai authorities. We advise before any file is opened, and we never guarantee an authority's decision.

Translations for Australia: caveats
- Australian government bodies generally require a NAATI-certified translation for documents not in English; the translator's certification number and stamp must be visible on every page.
- Documents issued in Thailand may also need Thai-side certification when the Australian authority asks for an authenticated original, so check both requirements before ordering.
- Provide the passport spelling of all names and any previous names — inconsistencies trigger requests for further information and delay the visa decision.
