O-A and O-X compliance

Long-stay health insurance for Thai visas

For O-A and O-X holders, insurance is not a precaution — it is a visa condition, and it is verified again every time you extend.

Compliant is not the same as adequate

Two separate tests matter. The first is compliance: does the policy meet the current statutory minimums and appear in the verification system immigration actually checks? The second is adequacy: would it survive a real inpatient episode in a Bangkok private hospital? Policies bought purely to clear the counter often fail the second test badly, and policies bought purely on medical merit sometimes fail the first.

What we handle

O-A compliant policies

Cover meeting the current statutory inpatient and outpatient minimums.

O-X ten-year cover

Policies structured for the longer O-X stay and its renewal cycle.

Longstay certificate

Verification through the official insurance system immigration checks.

Foreign insurer declarations

Prescribed immigration forms completed by overseas insurers where accepted.

Renewals and extensions

Policy years aligned with immigration years so no extension is refused on dates.

Document translation

Medical records, policy schedules and claim documents translated and certified.

How we place and maintain cover

  1. 1. Requirement check

We confirm the current minimum sums for your visa category and extension date.

  2. 2. Policy review

Existing cover tested against the immigration criteria before you buy anything new.

  3. 3. Health disclosure

Pre-existing conditions declared properly so the policy is not void when claimed.

  4. 4. Placement

Cover placed with an insurer inside the verification system.

  5. 5. Certificate

Longstay certificate issued and attached to the immigration bundle.

  6. 6. Renewal diary

Renewal scheduled ahead of the extension so the dates never fall short.

Frequently asked questions

Which visas require health insurance?

The Non-Immigrant O-A and O-X long-stay categories carry a statutory insurance condition, and the requirement is re-checked at every extension. Other categories may require cover indirectly through their own conditions, so the safe assumption for any retirement-length stay is that a compliant policy will be asked for.

What minimum cover is accepted?

Immigration sets minimum inpatient and outpatient sums insured by ministerial announcement, and those figures have been revised upward more than once. A policy bought years ago at the old minimum will fail at renewal even though nothing about the policy changed — always check the current figure before renewing.

What is the Longstay certificate?

Compliant policies are evidenced through the official Thai General Insurance Association verification system, which produces the certificate immigration accepts. A foreign policy with equivalent cover but no entry in that system is routinely refused at the counter, which surprises many applicants.

Can I use my overseas insurer?

Sometimes. A foreign policy can be accepted where the insurer completes the prescribed immigration declaration form confirming the sums insured and the scope. Many international insurers will not sign it, so verify willingness before relying on the policy rather than after.

What about pre-existing conditions?

Most Thai long-stay policies exclude or heavily load pre-existing conditions, and non-disclosure voids the policy at the moment you need it. Declare everything, accept the exclusion where it applies, and price the alternative — an inpatient-only policy with a separate self-funded reserve is often better value than paying to insure a known condition.

Is there an age limit?

Yes. Most insurers close new applications at a maximum entry age and then allow renewal to a higher ceiling. Buying earlier keeps the renewal path open; waiting until the first extension is due can close it permanently. Age is the one variable that cannot be negotiated later.

Does the policy have to be renewed before the extension?

Yes, and the policy period must cover the whole requested extension period. A policy expiring one day before the extension ends is treated as non-compliant, so we align the policy year with the immigration year rather than the calendar year.

What happens if a claim exceeds the cover?

The minimum immigration sums are a compliance floor, not a clinical adequacy standard. A serious inpatient episode at a Bangkok private hospital can exceed the statutory minimum comfortably, so we usually recommend cover above the minimum for anyone who intends to use private care.
