Family visas and extensions in Thailand

A family visa is granted on a relationship, but it is renewed on evidence. Marriage, parenthood and dependency each carry their own documentary test, and immigration checks the file again every single year.

What actually decides a family extension

Applications rarely fail on the relationship itself. They fail on a foreign marriage or birth certificate that was never legalised for Thai use, on bank funds that were not seasoned for the required period, or on an extension that lapsed because the holder flew out without a re-entry permit. We build the file backwards from those three failure points.

What we handle

Spouse of a Thai national

Non-O marriage extensions, financial evidence packaging and annual renewals.

Parent of a Thai child

Support-based extensions with birth registration and relationship evidence.

Dependent children

Visas for minor children following a parent's status in Thailand.

Document legalisation

Certified Thai translation and Ministry of Foreign Affairs legalisation of foreign civil records.

Re-entry permits

Single and multiple re-entry permits so travel does not void an extension.

90-day and TM30 reporting

Address notification and 90-day reports kept clean between renewals.

Frequently asked questions

Which visa covers a foreign spouse of a Thai national?

The Non-Immigrant O category on the ground of marriage. It is normally obtained as a 90-day entry and then converted at immigration into a one-year extension of stay, renewed annually while the marriage subsists and the financial test is met.

What financial evidence does a marriage extension need?

Immigration accepts either a seasoned Thai bank balance held in the applicant's own name or a monthly income shown through a documented, verifiable source. The amounts and the seasoning period are set by immigration order and are checked at each renewal, so the money must be in place well before the application, not on the day.

Does my foreign marriage certificate work in Thailand?

Only after it is translated and legalised. A marriage registered abroad must be translated into Thai, certified, and legalised through the Thai Ministry of Foreign Affairs before a Thai office will accept it — an apostille alone is not enough for Thailand because Thailand is not an Apostille Convention member for inbound use in every scenario. We handle the full chain.

Can a parent of a Thai child get a visa?

Yes. A foreign parent supporting a Thai minor child can extend stay on that basis, with the child's birth registration, house registration and evidence of genuine support and contact. Proof of an ongoing parental relationship matters as much as the paperwork.

Can my elderly parent join me in Thailand?

A dependent parent of a Thai national can be sponsored on family grounds. A parent of a foreign resident is harder and usually runs through a retirement-type category instead, so the right answer depends on whose nationality anchors the family.

What is a re-entry permit and do I need one?

An extension of stay dies the moment you leave Thailand unless you hold a valid re-entry permit. Single and multiple versions are issued at immigration or at the airport before departure. Losing an extension to a forgotten re-entry permit is the single most common and most expensive family-visa mistake.

Is a home visit or interview normal?

For marriage extensions, yes. Immigration commonly requests photographs of the couple at the registered address, a sketch map, and sometimes an in-person visit or an interview with both spouses. Prepare for it rather than treating it as a sign of suspicion.

How long does the whole process take?

Document legalisation typically runs a few working days once the source documents are in hand, and the extension itself is usually granted under consideration for thirty days before final approval. Plan six to eight weeks end to end if foreign documents need legalising.
